Fresh & Clean: The Ultimate Community Guide to Non-Toxic Laundry

Laundry should be pretty simple. Most of us have been doing it since we moved out of our parents' house, if not before, right? Okay, fine… I was one of those kids who brought bags of dirty clothes home from college. I’m not proud of it, but to be fair, those dorm laundry rooms were never very inviting!

Even without waiting two hours for a dormmate to clear out the dryer, laundry can still feel like a daunting chore.

To make matters more complicated, it's becoming clear that many conventional products aren’t doing our health or the planet any favors (think synthetic fragrances, plastic laundry pods, fabric softeners, and single-use dryer sheets). But "clean" alternatives aren’t all created equal either, which sparked an insightful discussion in our recent Crunchy Crew (family meetup) group chat. After all, if anyone knows how to get stains out of clothes, it’s parents of young kids!

From popular swaps like Blueland tablets to lesser-known traditional recommendations like Zote (a tallow-based laundry soap bar), the group's recommendations were truly eye-opening. Since everyone had such fantastic advice, I compiled all of our community’s favorite products, tips, and tricks into one handy guide!

Favorite Products

Blueland Laundry Tablets: Convenient, plastic-free tablets that skip the bulk and water weight of liquid jugs.

Miss Mouth’s Messy Mouth Stain Treater: A lifesaver for toddlers and parents alike, especially on berry, wine, and food spills.

Branch Basics Oxygen Boost: Acts as a fragrance-free booster to lift stubborn stains, brighten whites, and deodorize laundry without bleach or toxic chemicals.

Zote Laundry Bar: A traditional tallow-based soap bar that works wonders as a pre-treater or DIY base.

Wool Dryer Balls: The ultimate natural swap to replace single-use, fragrance-heavy dryer sheets and cut down on drying time.

> Note: The Crunchy Crew is not sponsored by any of these brands (though we certainly wouldn't turn down samples if they wanted to hook us up!).

Tips and Tricks

DIY Laundry Powder: Grate a bar of Zote and mix it with washing soda and baking soda for an easy, low-cost DIY detergent.

Tackling Berry Stains: Soak stained clothes in very cold (or ice) water mixed with baking soda before throwing them into the wash.

Tough Stains (Chocolate, Mud & Grease): Wet the fabric, rub directly with a Zote bar, let it sit for 15–30 minutes, and spot-treat once more right before washing.

Reset Extra Stinky Items: Soak gym clothes or lingering odors in warm water mixed with 1 cup of distilled white vinegar prior to your standard cycle.

Give the Dryer a Vacation: Take advantage of the warm months and line-dry laundry outdoors sunlight naturally freshens and brightens whites!
